Audience Development and Engagement
Open to: All majors (grad and undergrad) - no prerequisites, no application required!

This course delves into the latest methods for understanding audience motivations and innovative strategies for engaging them through immersive experiences. Students will explore tools, processes, and neuroscience to activate and inspire intuitive participation, fostering meaningful connections across diverse content strategies. By utilizing narrative, technology, interaction design, and physical space, students will learn to design experiences that encourage agency in both solo and group settings. This project-based course includes real-world use cases spanning entertainment, gaming, branding, and education, with students working in teams on short sprints that mirror industry timelines. Through hands-on exploration of behavioral design, XR, Web3, projection mapping, and digital and analog technologies, students will develop essential skills for roles in immersive experience design, such as UI/UX design, media production, writing, and directing. Additionally, students will gain insights into analyzing and measuring participation using emerging analytics like psychographic and language analysis, as well as digital and physical engagement metrics.
Immersive Media Studio
Open to: All majors (grad and undergrad) - no prerequisites, no application required!

This course explores how emerging and mobile technologies shape participatory practices in creating, communicating, collaborating, and sharing stories. Students will examine how these technologies function, the new forms of communication and storytelling they enable, the structures of control and power they reflect, and how they impact diverse contexts and communities. Through hands-on projects, students will design immersive experiences using a variety of technologies, gaining practical experience in roles such as Sound Design, Lighting Design, Projection Mapping, and System Architecture/Development. The course emphasizes building, deploying, and testing applications on immersive hardware, preparing students for dynamic roles in the immersive media field.
Next Steps
After receiving a passing grade (C+ or higher) in Audience Development & Engagement or Immersive Media Studio you will be cleared to register for Experimental Storytelling and subsequently Immersive Experience making you a fully realized Texas Immersive Explorer!
Note: If you are in the Digital Media and Arts Bridging Disciplines Program, Texas Immersive courses can count toward completion of the certificate.
